Hello

The room was filled
With people without faces
Just small talk
And forgetfulness
As we stand in a circle
Getting to know people is always hard
Should I lie
Or ruin everything and tell them about the real me
Then someone starts
Hello, my name is Remorse
Have we met
Only once or twice
Or every single day of my life
Hello, my name is Defeat
I know you recognize me
We used to play together
When we were younger
And when you thought you'd won
I'd kill you again
Hello, my name is Envy
Remember
I'm the one who always won
Always had this and that
You may not remember me
But I remember the look in you eyes
As you stared at my name
Hello, my name is Anger
Don't look at me like that
We're family after all
Yet
Why was it
That I
Was always better
And then it's my time
Hello, my name is...

John

I could hear my rapid breath
As I lay awake in bed
Remembering the time I first gave up
For nothing happened to me anymore
I was told to tell the world my life
But as I said
Nothing ever happened to me
Then I met you
And when I finally jumped
You caught me
I was down
You picked me up
And when I crumbled
You taped me back together
You simply refused to say goodbye
And that’s when I realized
You loved me
So why?
When you looked down at me
With your unforgettable coat blowing around you
And your shoes inches off the edge
My face puffy and red
While painful tears stream down
You pressed the dreadful cell to your face
And you said those final words
I wanted so hard to places my shaking hands over my ears
Wishing I couldn't hear a single word you said
“I’m a fake” you told me
“Okay, shut up. Shut up” I replied
Goodbye
And with your arms stretched out wide
You didn’t fly
When I’d jumped
You’d caught me
When I was down
And picked me up
You taped me back together
When I crumpled
You'd loved me
So why did I hear
The crunching of your body breathing
And your dark blood pouring out more and more onto the ground around
Your final resting place
Everything stopped
At least it did for me
As I ran towards you
Even though the world seemed to be trying to stop me
From getting to you
My love
And only for seconds
I was allowed to stand
Over your cold body
When it was your turn to jump
I couldn't catch you
You were down
And I couldn't hold you
You crumbled
I had no tape
I thought you loved me…
But our time together will never end
For I have the feeling
That I will see you soon
And until then
I promise I won't forget
Your face
Forever embedded in my heart

Remember that Day

Remember that day?
That one day?
Do you?
I do.
I remember.
I remember it well.
You told me
Just one thing,
One little story.
But in that story,
There was so much pain.
So much misery.
And I listened.
I heard it all.
And it wasn't easy for you,
I heard the sound of your voice.
And I saw the look in your eyes.
I knew it wasn't easy to tell.
It wasn't at all.
But there you were,
Spilling your secrets
Into my ears,
And into my heart,
And I will remember that moment forever.
You did so much for me,
Telling that story.
You showed me a part of your soul,
That part hidden from the world.
And someday,
Maybe,
I can show you one of mine.

Where I'm From

I am from dead plants,

from sorrows,
pictures of the dead,
and long lost faces.
I am from the thick bark covering the tree
that makes avocados as dark
as the dying cactus by the shed.
I am from rotten fruit that piles up in the yard.

I’m from mirrors that look deep into your soul
and pale peeled paint.
From singing at the tick of midnight
and nights like fire.
From Nancy and David.
I’m from Cowboy and Traveler,
from “What’s cookin’.”
and from “London bridge is falling down”
and crashing to my knees.

I’m from the blood that dripped
from my mother’s finger onto the knife.
From the Iwo Jima black sand
and the spicy smell that floats from the pumpkin pies.
I’m from the sewing chair
filled with secrets and stories,
from which I cherish and hide.

I am from those moments-
sliding down into the cool Skaneateles Lake water towards my family and friends.
